Cascarino: Liverpool’s summer signing is just Ekitic, Slot is just kidding

October 26th Former Premier League striker Cascarino harshly criticized Liverpool’s 2-3 loss to Brentford on the show and warned that the team was facing the risk of relegation.

Q: What are your thoughts on Liverpool's loss to Brentford?

Cascarino: I'm just shocked by Liverpool. They once again completely confirmed what I've thought about them all season.

This performance replicated everything I thought was bad about it. Two more goals were added to the goals conceded column, and by the way, the 3-2 scoreline does not do justice to the game, Brentford could have easily won 4-1.

Liverpool was beaten so easily by basic corner kicks, free kicks, throw-ins, and they also had big problems with the ball. And that’s not even counting all the problems without the ball. Yesterday, Szoboszlai was the only player on the field who looked in shape.

Q: What do you think of Coach Slott and the team’s transfer operations?

Cascarino: Slott was just kidding. When you have a situation like this, a bunch of transfer players come through the door, and we only see their effect on the field, but there are other things that happen in football clubs, because I have experienced it myself, those players who have transferred, do they settle in the dressing room, on the training ground, in the team?

When you make a lot of transfers, most of them have to work. Liverpool was a very stable team last season and nothing happened, but now they have made a lot of transactions and made a mess. It feels like you're kidding in every position.

Q: Slott admitted after the game that Brentford won more duels. What do you think?

Cascarino: That's an indictment. If they win more faceoffs, that would say everything. They want to win more.

Q: How do you evaluate Liverpool’s major summer signings?

Cascarino: Let’s take a look at summer transfers. If you look at Ekitic, he is probably the best one who has come. And then there's Isaac, who's obviously injured and doesn't really look like he's getting healthy. So this signing hasn't worked yet. Hope he can do it in the future. When we look at Wirtz again, it doesn’t work and he is struggling.

So of these four major transfers, you can only say that one is decent, Ekitic. Well, that's not going to work for your team. So they struggled.

Q: You mentioned Terry Venables’ theory, does this apply to Liverpool?

Cascarino: Terry Venables has a famous saying, you buy five players for a club and if none of them work, you will be relegated.

If four doesn't work, you'll struggle and fight for relegation. You can do this in turn. If all four or five work, you get a Champions League spot. Or if all five guys work, you have a chance to win the championship.

Liverpool is in that "death spiral" at the moment. I mean, I look at it...

Q: What do you think of the comparison between Liverpool and Manchester United now?

Cascarino: Last season, everyone was talking about Manchester United. Said it would take them 10 years to get back to Liverpool's position, or challenge for the title. And I'm thinking, well, it only took them a month to catch Liverpool.

What we have witnessed over the past few weeks is that Manchester United look to be a better team than Liverpool.

Despite all the blame Amorim took and what happened, we just saw last week that Manchester United went to Anfield and played their own style, a specific way of playing, and ended up scoring two goals against Liverpool.

Then they cemented the victory with another performance.

But they had already consolidated when they beat Sunderland, because Manchester United played very well against Sunderland, and Sunderland was also gaining momentum at the time. So I'm worried, where is the solution for Liverpool?

Q: What is your overall opinion of Liverpool this season?

Cascarino: I said it at the beginning of the season, and I told you after five games, we are in a false position. Liverpool are not that good.

All their transfers so far have been a step backwards. But does that mean you can turn things around? Well, yes you can. But now the manager must really use his authority and try to convince the players of what is necessary.

There is also this joking way of employing people. Yes, they have injuries and they still have the Champions League. I understand all of this. But at the moment, what I see is a very poor Liverpool, even compared to their last season.
