Continue to serve his sentence! Brazilian court upheld the verdict on 41-year-old Robinho, who has served one and a half years in prison for 9 years

August 29th, Brazilian media Global Sports, CNN and other media reported that the majority of Brazil's Supreme Court decided to uphold Robinho's imprisonment verdict.

Among the 11 judges of the Brazilian Supreme Court, six of them, including the presiding judge, supported the upholding of the original judgment. The only judge supporting the appeal was Gilma Mendes.

Robinho's defense team had requested his release on the grounds that the immigration law used to confirm that the Italian court ruled was effective after the crime occurred and should not apply to the case. But the rapporteur said Robinho's defense attorney tried to rediscuss the issues that had been resolved, which was not allowed.

Background: Robinho was sentenced to nine years in prison for participating in gang rape of a woman in an Italian nightclub in 2013. Since Brazilian law does not allow extradition of his own citizens, Italy sought to allow Robinho to serve his sentence in Brazil. The player was officially imprisoned in March 2024.
