Mavericks go all out to chase the Pelicans scorer in trading simulation, reshape the championship expectations

According to US sports media F/W reporter Eddie Bitar. Xu Xingxing has rewritten the storyline of the 2025-26 season. By winning No. 1 pick Flag, he showed his intention to win now, ending a roller coaster offseason, and a mid-season heavy trade sent Doncic to the Lakers for Davis.

Frager's arrival ushered in a new era built around three former No. 1 picks: Irving (returned from injury), Davis and Flag. NBA insiders have bet on the 19-year-old talent, most people call him a leading candidate for Rookie of the Year. With his position versatility, elite intuition and star bloodline, Flag immediately raised the cap in Dallas.

However, the Mavericks still need to have one more impact on the frontcourt. Their backcourt needs a thorough upgrade to blend with their new core and become a legitimate contender for the Western Conference. To make a deal, Dallas set his sights on a perfect shooting guard for the Pelicans.

Mavericks get: Hawkins

Pelicans get: Thompson, Prosper, 2032 first-round pick

Dallas Mavericks add a young marksman around the three stars. The Mavericks may take major steps to strengthen their backcourt by acquiring 23-year-old shooting guard Hawkins from the Pelicans. Hawkins, 6-foot-5 and 190 pounds, brought promising scoring ability to the Mavericks. His addition complements Irving and Davis’ existing core, forming a powerful trio.

Hawkins' scoring ability and shooting efficiency make him a valuable asset to the team. In the 2024-25 NBA season, Hawkins averaged 10.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game. His shooting efficiency includes 37.2% shooting percentage, but he may reach higher shooting percentages to demonstrate his ability to contribute on the offensive end.

Hawkins partnered with veteran stars such as Irving and Davis, making the team a strong contender in the Western Conference, enhancing their depth and scoring versatility. Hawkins is also much younger than Klay Thompson and will be able to run side by side with Cooper Flag.

This move may make the Mavericks a real contender

With Jordan Hawkins joining, the Mavericks' backcourt has been significantly strengthened. Hawkins' scoring ability and shooting efficiency complemented the talents of Irving and Davis, forming a dynamic trio that can compete with the league's elite teams. The Mavericks' strategic moves, including the acquisition of Hawkins, make them a team to watch for the upcoming season. They combine experienced stars and emerging talent to make them potential contenders in the Western Conference. As the season progresses, the Mavericks’ performance will be closely watched to see if the deal pushes them into the championship battle.

If Hawkins can seamlessly integrate into the Mavericks system, the team may surprise many people and make a big hit in the playoffs. Thompson might be a better shooter with obviously more championship experience, but Hawkins brings different momentum to a team that can use more youth and speed.
