Spurs officially announced a number of personnel changes in coaching staff: new players joining and internal promotion

The Spurs coaching staff of the post-Gregg Popovich era is taking shape, and the team recently officially announced the latest personnel appointments. Sean Sweeney will serve as chief assistant coach and former Austin Spurs head coach Scott King will serve as assistant coach with Corliss Williamson, the team announced. In addition, Monday's announcement included the addition of other new faces and several internal promotions.

Sweeney has served as the Mavericks' assistant coach for the past four seasons and has previously assisted Jason Kidd in Brooklyn and Milwaukee. He is known for his outstanding defensive coordination and has won interview opportunities for head coach positions several times in recent years. After winning Kidd's full trust during his Bucks, the young coach became the designer of the team's elite defensive system, as Milwaukee Magazine reported:

"I have handed over command on the defensive end to Sweeney, and we communicate every day," Kidd said in an interview with NBA TV. "He didn't let us become the league's top defensive team overnight, but he spent a lot of time on it."

Sweeney's qualifications and resume are quite impressive. He has worked with young players in the past to help them realize their potential. This is an important reinforcement that should greatly reduce Johnson's work burden.

Collis Williamson and Scott King will work under Johnson and the newly appointed Chief Assistant. Williamson spent two seasons with another successful Western Conference team, the Timberwolves, before joining San Antonio. "Big Star" has a long NBA career and won the championship before entering the ranks of coaches. He brings valuable experience at all levels.

Kin was the head coach of the Austin Spurs and was awarded the 2025 G League Coach of the Year. There are precedents of coaches who have successfully transformed from Austin to the NBA, including Atlanta Hawks head coach Quin Snyder and Mitch Johnson himself, as well as Utah Jazz head coach, former Spurs assistant Will Hardy and former Memphis Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins, both of whom have worked as assistant coaches on the G League affiliate team.

Assistant coach and player development team also have new staff additions. Jimmy Baron, who has been the team’s shooting development coach for the past two seasons, and Josh Brannon, who has been in various positions in the team for seven years, were promoted. Tim Martin was also hired for the same position. Martin is a technical coach and trainer who worked with Victor Wembanyama when he was still playing for the Metropolitan 92 team in France. The roster of players he once coached is not only long, but also star-studded.

Another joining the player development department is a familiar name - former NBA All-Star Rashard Lewis. Lewis worked as an assistant coach for the Pistons for one year and joined the Spurs coaching team in the summer league last year. The

team also hired Andrew Weatherman as coaching analyst and promoted Madison Clower to player development analyst.

In this official announcement, the names of two assistant coaches in Popovich's coaching staff, Brett Brown and Matt Nielsen, did not appear. It has not been confirmed whether the two of them will remain, but according to KENS5's Nate Ryan, Nelson is expected to stay in the team. After this round of personnel changes, it would be a surprise if Brown was still on the coaching staff.

It seems that Mickey Johnson has been allowed to form his own coaching team, and, at least from the paper lineup, this team is quite strong.
