A mad new penalty kick rule that may begin next year s World Cup

Eduardo Iturald Gonzalez enforced the La Liga from 1995 to 2012. Recently, he talked in a show that FIFA is planning a major change to the rules of football matches that could drive crazy.

The 58-year-old former international referee issued a preview on the show: "A thing that may happen next year - the rules for penalty kicks will change significantly."

Gonzalez explained the change of the rules in a few words: "Once the goalkeeper saves the penalty, he will not be allowed to shoot again. The game will be suspended and enter a dead ball state, and the defender will drive the goal."

Gonzalez emphasized: "This new rule is a concept proposed by Corina (a famous bald referee in Italy and a member of the UEFA referee committee).

In fact, as early as July this year, the British Sun reported that according to a report they obtained, a change in the rule regarding penalty kicks is being considered.

This new rule will be adopted in the 2026 World Cup.

The current modification is still subject to approval by the International Football Association Council (IFAB), but more and more football officials support the new regulations, believing that the penalty should be changed to a single shot and there should be no second chance. One of the main arguments of supporters is that in most cases the penalty kick gives the offensive side much more chance of scoring than the foul itself that leads to the penalty kick. Furthermore, it is considered unfair for teams benefiting from penalties to get a chance to make a follow-up shot, especially if the goalkeeper has been asked to stand at least one foot on the line when the opponent shoots. Another argument from supporters is that the penalty kick process should be regarded as a closed dead ball link, and the new rules that do not allow for re-shooting can eliminate controversy about other players entering the penalty area early, because any action of any player will lose its meaning after the free thrower shoots.
