May 14th Roma coach Ranieri was angry at the VAR and referee's penalty in the game against Atlanta. This game was crucial to competing for the top four, and Roma eventually lost 1-2.

In the second half, referee Soza awarded Roma a penalty because Passalic fouled against Cone. But after looking back on the sidelines, the referee changed his decision. "Rocky confirmed to me that the technical evaluation was valid. It was not a penalty kick and was cancelled correctly," Zanpa, chairman of the Italian referees Association, said in an interview with ANSA. "VAR intervened completely in accordance with the regulations and corrected an obvious and critical error. It was not a penalty kick. Passalic did make moves, but the Roma players collided with their opponents because of inertia."

Zanpa also commented on Ranieri's remarks: "Ranieri is a coach who has always been known for his fairness, calmness and sportsmanship. We are very sorry for his words."
