On July 10, the NBA officially announced that 44-year-old James Jones went to the NBA's League office to serve as NBA executive vice president and basketball operations president, and reported directly to the league's president of operations Byron Spurr. The NBA officially announced that James Jones will be responsible for all NBA basketball operations affairs, including game rules formulation and interpretation, code of conduct and discipline punishment, and policy procedures related to event operations. He will communicate with players, coaches, team executives and referees on issues such as game status, game style and game rules. Jones will work with key internal and external stakeholders to develop innovative strategies and solutions to maintain the highest level of competition and competition. He will replace Joe Dumas, who left the league office in April to become executive vice president of basketball operations for the New Orleans Pelicans.

James Jones served as an executive of the Suns for 8 years. He was hired as vice president of basketball operations by the Suns in 2017. He was appointed as general manager of the team in 2019. He led the team to the finals in 2021 and won the executive of the year. He was promoted to president and general manager of the Suns basketball operations in 2022. However, in May 2025, Jones was demoted to senior consultant of the team and no longer served as general manager of the Suns.

James Jones immediately joined the Suns after his 14-year career in the NBA. He has played for the Pacers, Suns, Trail Blazers, Heat and Cavaliers. He has played in a total of 709 regular season games, averaging 5.2 points and 1.8 rebounds per game in 15.7 minutes; he played in 148 playoffs, averaging 3.7 points and 1.6 rebounds per game in 13.4 minutes.

James Jones won three NBA championships at the Heat (2011-12 and 2012-13) and the Cavaliers (2015-16). He reached the finals with the team in the last seven years of his career and has a very good relationship with LeBron James.

Jones was selected by the Pacers at the 49th pick in 2003, with a career three-point shooting percentage of 40.1%, and won the 3-point contest at the Los Angeles All-Star Weekend in 2011; as a player, Jones served as Finance Secretary of the NBA Players Union from 2008-17 and received a bachelor's degree in finance from the University of Miami.

Jones and his wife Destiny have two daughters, Jadynn and Jodie, and a son, James.
